Traditional dancing at Simanindo

"Tortor" - Traditional dance for the Batak

Simanindo is situated on the northern tip of Samosir Island, Lake Toba, Sumatra, Indonesia. Visit traditional Batak dances (tortor) at Huta Bolon, just next to the road and also nearby the lake (so you can also go by boat). Especially "Sigalegale" dance is very nice to watch. A wooden puppet representing a deceased son is moved by strings.

There is also a little museum with some very nice ancient Batak artifacts. In a beautiful traditional village surrounded by earth walls with bamboo on top, you can watch a very nice dancing performance. You can take some very nice pictures here, don't miss out!

Performances (about 45 minutes):
Monday-Saturday: Start on 10h30. 2nd performance starts on 11h45.
Sunday: Start 11h45.

“My third stay here and I'll be coming back.”

I treat my trip to Lake Toba unlike many. I'm there for chilling out on the porch staring emptily at the lake with a coffee or beer and a book.

In this respect I can imagine no better place than the Carolina. The service is not intrusive, but is happy to help. The rooms are clean and spacious. The porches are very comfortable, quiet, and inviting. The restaurant is even more inviting. With a selection of different levels of privacy, one can interact with fellow guests, be alone for a quiet conversation or in your own thoughts. The views are great from here and with the Batak architecture design you will never feel a drop of rain if you're unfortunate enough to encounter the brief spells.

The concessions are priced in line with the rest of Toba, so I would definitely recommend hiring a motorbike and exploring Samosir. The Batak people are incredibly warm and hospitable.

The beach is imaginary but it's easy enough to imagine that the sand covered embankment is tropical in the daytime when the warm breeze is flowing off the lake and you jump into the refreshing fresh water.

There are ants but among vermin, I will take ants over any other options. The screens for the (windows) could be cleaned more frequently as well and hope that the management will take that to heart.

I can't compare with other accomodations in Tuk Tuk as I found Carolina and kept coming back.
